BOOK TOUR | THAT NIGHT by GILLIAN MCALLISTER

Hello and welcome to my blog! It's my turn on the Blog Tour and I'll let you in on a secret of mine, in my time blogging over two blogs...this is actually my first ever book tour! I will also have to admit that this is my first Gillian McAllister novel and I'm very excited to be sharing this with you. I'd also like to thank Penguin Random House for the physical copy provided. I hope you are all well, grab a drink of choice and get cosy because I'm about to delve into this - chefs kiss - of a book.

{Paperback | 464 Pages | Publisher: Michael Joseph}

"What would you do to protect your family?
ANYTHING.
That night everything changed.
The night Frannie commited a murder, but she didn’t mean to…
That night we helped her bury the body, what else could we do?
One hot summers night in Italy, Joe and Cathy Plant receive a phone call that will change their lives forever.
Their sister Frannie has killed a man, and she needs their help.
They were always close, some might say too close, siblings who worked together, lived next door to each other
And now they’ve buried a body together…
But when they return to England, Frannie, Joe and Cathy become tangled in lies in they’ve been telling,
to the police, to their friends, to each other…
But if you can’t trust your family, who can you trust?"

MY THOUGHTS

I love a good thriller and a good thriller this was. That Night delved right into the storyline. Starting right off the bat with Joe and Cathy receiving the phone call from their sister Frannie that would change their lives. Together they bury a body and cover up a murder.  It's a shocking opening that grips you to read more. You start to genuinely question what would you do in this situation. We've all turned to a significant other or a friend and questioned them if they'd help you hide a body and we all jokingly comment that we'd happily be alibis or we'd be the ones on the other end of the shovel hitting their exes etc etc but when it comes down to it, would you really help cover up a murder, accidental or not?

As the book goes on, you are slowly fed bits of information about the siblings, pointing light at various events and characters, the aftermath of what happened as lies add up. I wanted to know how it was going to unravel, I wanted to know if they'd get away with anything and that's what kept me going.

It's very twisty and who doesn't love a few twists or two.

The story does switch back and forth from past to present, each character having their own little chapter as well as taking place across several different locations from Verona to Birmingham, we are sucked into the world of the The Plants and it flowed very nicely.

Unlike the Plant family, I don't have any siblings of my own. I'm an only child. I could not relate to the sibling dynamic but you can get a sense of each character at the start of the book from the way they react to the situation and right throughout the novel, Cathy, calm, collected and serious while Joe is protective, quick to turn to anger and more outspoken while Frannie is funny, sometimes irrational and perhaps the heart of the siblings.

This book can be tense at times but it's well written, fast paced and has everything I expect from a great thriller. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you love a good psychological thriller with a family dynamic, it won't disappoint. I will also be checking out some of McAllister's other written works too.

Happy Reading
